City of Auburn Regulations

Discharge of legal* fireworks is allowed on July 4th only, between the hours of 9:00 AM - 11:00 PM. Discharge is also allowed from 6:00 PM on December 31, to 1:00 AM on January 1.

You must be at least 16 years old to purchase legal fireworks.

Increased Enforcement

There are three City ordinances that regulate fireworks: (auburn.municipal.codes/ACC/8.24)

a. ACC 8.24.020 (Illegal Sale/Purchase/Discharge)
This ordinance regulates the sale, purchase and discharge of legal/consumer fireworks in the City. Except for the following dates and times.
1. Sale and Purchase. Between the hours of 1200-2100 hours on June 28th of any year, and 0900-2100 June 29th-July 4th of any year.
2. Discharge between 0900-2300 on July 4th of any year.

b. ACC 8.24.030.A (Illegal Fireworks).
This ordinance prohibits any fireworks that produce visual or audible effects when exploded or detonated. Those types of fireworks cannot be used, possessed or detonated in the City at any time, unless a specific legal exception exists within ACC 8.24.030.A (1-7) (See paragraph 3 below for additional details).

c. ACC 8.24.030.E. Reckless Discharge or Use of Fireworks - Penalty.
Any person who uses or discharges fireworks in a reckless manner that creates a substantial risk of death or serious physical injury to another person or damage to the property of another is guilty of a gross misdemeanor.

d. ACC 2.22.190 (Fireworks in Parks). It is unlawful to carry, shoot, fire, or explode any fireworks or explosives of any kind in any park.

Use ACC 8.24.020 when the subject is purchasing/selling or detonating legal fireworks at a time other than the above.

Violation – Penalty for all of the applicable ordinances listed above except ACC 8.24.030.E are:
1st conviction = $250 fine
2nd conviction = $500 fine
3rd conviction = misdemeanor

Tips For Fireworks Safety

  • Consider attending a public display as a safe alternative
  • Buy and use only legal fireworks
  • Follow directions and safety recommendations printed on the fireworks
  • Maintain adult supervision
  • Use fireworks in an area clear of materials that can burn (grass, bark, trees)
  • Keep garden hoses ready
  • Wet down fireworks display area
  • Light one item at a time, move away quickly and keep a safe distance
  • Dispose of used fireworks by first soaking them in water
  • Trim any tall grass close to buildings or fences
  • Clean all gutters and move burnable materials away from homes
  • Place minor burns in cool water, call 911 if you need further assistance
