Opening Reception

On Wednesday, January 17, 2024 the Postmark Center for the Arts held a reception for artists from the Muckleshoot Tribe.

"By 5:30 PM there were over 100 people at the event. Then a city representative used a mic and welcomed everyone. There were thanks given to the artists, a sincere land acknowledgement recognizing the connection and history to the land. They acknowledged Auburn City Councilmembers and Commissioners present in the crowd and their contributions to the arts. Then each artist was given the chance to say a few words and talk about their art.

Gale White Eagle described a connection between her weaving and her ancestors, saying:

'When I am weaving, I am listening to my ancestors.'

This is a common connection described by each artist in their own way. This seemed like a family affair, both living and passed." -  Raymond Street, on B Town Blog

Demonstrations

Over the month of March, Postmark held several demonstrations partnered with Muckleshoot Artists. Gail White Eagle held an introduction to Coast Salish wool spinning and weaving. In this pop-up White Eagle demonstrated the process from washing mountain goat hair, to prepping it, spinning the wool on a traditional Coast Salish Spindle Whorl, and finally, weaving.  Visitors were able to ask questions and had the opportunity to gain hands on familiarity with the materials.

Muckleshoot Carvers, Sam Obrovac, Tyson Simmons, and Keith Stevensons led a demonstration on Muckleshoot carving. Introducing traditional tools and processes in wood carving. Visitors had the opportunity to ask questions and observe.
